We had a big weekend as we arrived Thursday afternoon, spent Friday watching practice and doing the pit tour where we ran into Jim’s brother Mark who is the rider coach for USGPRU racer Jack Lewis who ran two fantastic races garnering a 2nd and a 3rd for the weekend. Friday night we headed to the Pepsi Center for Endurocross which is racing you have to see to believe. It was awesome, very technically difficult racing! Well worth the admission price.

Saturday we spent the day watching MotoGP/Moto2/125 and USGPRU practice and racing and then headed to the Indianapolis fairgrounds for the Indy Mile. What a race, Michigan’s Bryan Smith took a close win over Chris Carr. Exceptional racing that anyone who loves close racing should see!

Sunday was race day and it was blazing hot outside. We found a great place to shoot and watch the race with Mark who joined us after the USGPRU races. Sadly USGPU racer Peter Lenz was killed during the warmup session.  This a part of racing that happens and we believe strongly that Peter and his family knew the risks that come with racing motorized vehicles. Peter was a well quantified racer at 14 years old having won multiple championships. Rather than devalue his life dream to become a top professional motorcycle racer as some seem to want to do by complaining about his ability to recognize the risks, we understand completely his dream. We believe he was aware that racing is a risk sport and accepted the risk to compete at a high level. We hope that he rests in a better place knowing that he passed this life as the racer he wanted to be while he lived. We feel the hurt and loss the Lenz family must feel and offer our condolences at their loss.

Thankfully we had three days of warm weather which was a relief after the past two years of rain. American Ben Spies who decimated World Superbike last year on the factory Yamaha came to Indy on a mission. He scorched qualifying winning the pole and rode a great race for second place.

Jim and Mark had chosen Casey Stoner to win while Karoline picked her favorite rider Dani Pedrosa. And Dani did not let her down winning by a huge margin, he was simply the best rider on Sunday!

Thank you to Indy and MotoGP for bringing the race to the Speedway.

The race was everything we expected with bar to bar racing. Awesome battling back and forth! Something MotoGP the class clearly lacks. Moto2 is racing! Congrats to Spain’s Tony Elias for winning the inaugural Indy Moto 2 class.

A big thumbs up to the USA contingent of racers in this class. First and foremost Jason DeSalvo riding for Michigan owned/based team GP TECH. Jason rode an from a 27th starting position to 9th place in a field of world champion and world class racers. Jim and I have known GP Tech owner Geoff Maloney for many years and he is a great guy who is very deserving of the incredible showing Jason put in riding a motorcycle that  Geoff  and his crew put together and supported. Awesome job Geoff, Jason and the GP Tech crew.

Another thumbs up to Americans Roger Hayden who started 29th and finished 17th and Kenny Noyes who started 30th and finished 19th.

]]> http://fotomadness.com/?feed=rss2&p=531 0 Jake Lewis USGPRU Racer http://fotomadness.com/?p=561 http://fotomadness.com/?p=561#comments Sat, 04 Sep 2010 00:04:29 +0000 speed http://fotomadness.com/?p=561 While Jim and I were at Indy for this years MotoGP races we ran into Jim’s brother Mark who is currently the rider coach for up and coming moto racer Jake Lewis. We were able to spend a little time with Jake, his father and the team and it is nice to report on a rider who seems to have a bright future in motorcycle racing.

The USGPRU ran two separate races at Indy and Jake grabbed a 2nd and a 3rd over the weekend. Jake actually lead both races and probably should have won both of them, so we think. Jakes rapid growth this past year and added weight have thrown a bit of  fork in his goal to win this championship. That takes nothing away from the fact that he understands this disadvantage and continued to run hard both races. One thing Jim and I could see was how well composed Jake is for his age and knowing Jim’s brother Mark I’m sure that he has instilled a lot of smart speed and sensibility in Jakes riding and goals for the future. He has a very smooth riding style which I’m sure has a lot to do with Marks teaching.

Jake is heading to the 600 class where his size will be more of a benefit than the detriment it is currently. With help from the Hayden family we think you’ll hear a lot more from him in in the future.

This years highlight was American MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden the Grand Marshall for the event who rolled out on a factory Ducati flat tracker and ran a string of fast demonstration laps showing that he has not lost anything since moving to pavement racing.

What a race it was, Michigan’s Bryan Smith riding the Jay Springsteen/Bill Werner tuned factory Kawasaki beat Multi time GNC Champion Chris Carr after an evening of awesome actual bar to bar racing.

If you love motorcycle racing you have to see a mile flat track!

It was a moving experience to see the 58,228 names that are etched into the wall of those who died during the Vietnam war.  Those involved in the moving wall did a beautiful job of displaying the wall. The called out every name that was on the wall over a loudspeaker. It was a humbling experience and a wonderful memory all in one.

There were many detailed displays from the Vietnam war through WWI. The displays included Military clothing, weapons, gear and a gallery of beautiful models of military life in the field as well as a couple of the the helicopters that Jim worked on while he was in the service.

Every American should take the time to see the Moving Wall if they have not seen the real wall in Washington DC. Those who died for our freedom deserve a moment of gratitude from all of us.
